Is LASIK Right for You? Understanding Your Refractive Surgery Options

Laser vision correction has helped many people reduce their dependence on glasses. But not every eye suits every procedure, and some eyes are better left untreated. A thorough suitability check is the most important step.

What decides suitability?

  • A stable spectacle prescription for about a year
  • Adequate corneal thickness and a regular corneal shape
  • Healthy tear film and no active eye disease
  • Realistic expectations after counselling

Comparing the main options

i-LASIK uses a laser to create a thin corneal flap before reshaping the tissue beneath. Contoura Vision is a topography-guided form of LASIK planned around your corneal map. PRK reshapes the surface without a flap and can suit thinner corneas. ICL places a lens inside the eye and may be considered for high prescriptions.

What about reading glasses after 40?

Presbyopia — difficulty focusing up close with age — is a separate natural change. Laser correction for distance vision does not prevent it, and your surgeon can discuss options.

The best procedure is the one that is safest for your eyes. A pre-LASIK work-up will tell you which options are available to you.
