Laser Vision Correction

Streamlight PRK

Streamlight PRK corrects vision without creating a corneal flap — a useful option when the cornea is thin or a flap is best avoided.

Call Now
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is one of the earliest forms of laser vision correction and remains an excellent choice for selected eyes. With a 'no-touch' approach such as Streamlight, the surface epithelium is removed with the laser itself rather than with instruments.

What is Streamlight PRK?

In PRK, the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed and the corneal surface beneath is reshaped with an excimer laser. Because no flap is created, more corneal tissue is preserved. In transepithelial 'no-touch' PRK, the laser removes the epithelium and treats the cornea in a single sequence. The epithelium then regrows over a few days under a bandage contact lens.

Symptoms & signs

  • Myopia, hypermetropia or astigmatism
  • Thin corneas not ideal for LASIK
  • Contact sports, armed forces or occupations where a flap is undesirable

Causes & risk factors

  • Refractive error from corneal curvature or eye length

Who needs this treatment?

  • Adults with stable prescription
  • Patients with thinner corneas
  • People with active, high-impact lifestyles
  • Healthy eyes without active disease

How it is diagnosed

  • Refraction
  • Corneal tomography and pachymetry
  • Dry-eye assessment
  • Dilated retina examination

Treatment options

Streamlight PRK

No-touch surface treatment.

i-LASIK / Contoura

Flap-based alternatives for suitable corneas.

ICL

Lens-based alternative for high powers.

Procedure / what to expect

  1. Numbing dropsThe eye is anaesthetised.
  2. Epithelial removal and reshapingThe laser removes the surface layer and reshapes the cornea.
  3. Bandage contact lensA soft lens protects the surface while it heals.
  4. HealingThe surface typically heals over several days; the bandage lens is then removed at review.

Frequently asked questions

Recovery from PRK can involve more discomfort for a few days while the surface heals. Medication helps manage this.

Vision improves gradually; most patients see well for daily tasks within a week or two, with further improvement over weeks.

PRK may be preferred for thin corneas, certain corneal shapes or lifestyles with risk of eye trauma.
