Ptosis Eye Surgery

A drooping upper eyelid can block vision and cause strain. Ptosis surgery lifts the lid to restore the field of view.

Ptosis may be present from birth or develop with age, injury or contact lens use. In children, a droopy lid can interfere with visual development; in adults it may restrict the upper field of vision. Careful measurement guides the right surgical approach.

What is ptosis?

Ptosis (blepharoptosis) is drooping of the upper eyelid. It occurs when the muscle that lifts the eyelid (levator) or its attachment is weak, stretched or not developed properly. Depending on the severity, the eyelid may partially or fully cover the pupil.

Symptoms & signs

  • Drooping of one or both upper eyelids
  • Raising eyebrows or tilting the head back to see
  • Tired, heavy eyelids
  • Reduced upper field of vision

Causes & risk factors

  • Congenital — present at birth
  • Age-related stretching of the levator tendon
  • Long-term contact lens use
  • Eye or eyelid injury
  • Nerve or muscle conditions (need medical evaluation)

Who needs this treatment?

  • Children with ptosis affecting vision
  • Adults whose droopy lid blocks vision or causes strain
