Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of preventable vision loss among working-age adults. Our retina team offers screening, imaging and the full range of treatments, while working with you to keep sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under control.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the tiny blood vessels of the retina caused by long-standing high blood sugar. Vessels may leak fluid or blood, causing swelling of the central retina (diabetic macular oedema), or close off, leading to growth of fragile new vessels (proliferative retinopathy) that can bleed or cause scar tissue and retinal detachment.
