DCR Eye Surgery

Persistent watering or swelling near the inner corner of the eye can mean a blocked tear duct. DCR creates a new drainage path for tears.

Call Now
When the tear drainage system is blocked, tears overflow and the tear sac can become infected. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is the standard surgical solution for many adults with nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

What is DCR surgery?

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is an operation that creates a new opening between the tear sac and the inside of the nose, bypassing a blocked nasolacrimal duct. This allows tears to drain normally again. It may be performed through a small skin incision (external DCR) or through the nose (endoscopic DCR), depending on the case.

Symptoms & signs

  • Constant watering of the eye
  • Sticky discharge
  • Painful swelling at the inner corner of the eye
  • Recurrent eye infections

Causes & risk factors

  • Chronic sinus or nasal disease
  • Facial injury
  • Recurrent infection (dacryocystitis)

Who needs this treatment?

  • Adults with confirmed nasolacrimal duct obstruction
  • Patients with recurrent dacryocystitis

How it is diagnosed

  • Lacrimal syringing to test patency
  • Examination of eyelids and puncta
  • Nasal assessment where needed

Treatment options

Treatment of acute infection

Antibiotics before surgery.

External DCR

Through a small skin incision near the nose.

Endoscopic DCR

Procedure / what to expect

  1. EvaluationSyringing confirms the blockage.
