Macular Degeneration Treatment

Macular degeneration affects sharp central vision. Early detection and treatment can help slow its progression.

The macula is responsible for reading, recognising faces and fine detail. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is common after 50. With regular monitoring and timely treatment of the 'wet' form, many patients maintain useful vision.

What is macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration is a degenerative condition of the macula — the central part of the retina. In 'dry' AMD, deposits (drusen) and thinning of the macula cause gradual change. In 'wet' AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak, which can cause faster vision loss and needs prompt treatment.
