Laser Vision Correction

Refractive Eye Surgery

Glasses-free vision is possible for many people. A detailed suitability check helps decide which refractive procedure — if any — is right for your eyes.

Refractive surgery corrects focusing errors such as myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness) and astigmatism. Different eyes suit different procedures, so we begin with a comprehensive work-up and recommend an option only when your corneal and eye health support it.

What is refractive eye surgery?

Refractive eye surgery reshapes the cornea with a laser, or places a specialised lens inside the eye, so that light focuses correctly on the retina. The aim is to reduce or eliminate dependence on spectacles or contact lenses. Common options include LASIK-type procedures (including i-LASIK and topography-guided Contoura), surface laser treatment (PRK) and implantable collamer lenses (ICL/IPCL) for higher powers or thin corneas.

Symptoms & signs

  • Dependence on glasses or contact lenses for daily activities
  • Contact lens intolerance or discomfort
  • Myopia, hypermetropia or astigmatism with a stable prescription
  • Lifestyle, sports or occupational needs for spectacle-free vision

Causes & risk factors

  • Myopia — eyeball slightly long or cornea too steep
  • Hypermetropia — eyeball short or cornea too flat
  • Astigmatism — uneven corneal curvature
  • Often inherited; prescription usually stabilises in adulthood

Who needs this treatment?

  • Adults (typically 18+) with a stable spectacle power for at least a year
  • Healthy corneas of adequate thickness and regular shape
  • No active eye infection or uncontrolled systemic disease
  • Realistic expectations after counselling

How it is diagnosed

  • Refraction and cycloplegic refraction
  • Corneal topography/tomography
  • Pachymetry (corneal thickness)
  • Tear film and dry-eye assessment
  • Pupil size and dilated retina examination

Treatment options

i-LASIK

A flap-based laser procedure where the corneal flap is created with a laser and the underlying tissue reshaped.

Contoura Vision (topography-guided LASIK)

Treatment guided by the individual map of your cornea, which may help address corneal irregularities.

Streamlight PRK

A no-flap surface treatment — useful for thinner corneas or people in contact sports.

ICL / IPCL

An implantable lens placed inside the eye, an option for high powers or when laser is unsuitable.

Frequently asked questions

Laser reshaping of the cornea is permanent, but natural age-related changes such as presbyopia (reading difficulty after 40) can still occur later.

Age alone does not decide suitability. People over 40 may have other options; your doctor will advise after examination.

There is no single best procedure. The right choice depends on your corneal thickness, shape, prescription and lifestyle.

Numbing drops are used, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some discomfort can occur after PRK during surface healing.
