Squint Eye Treatment

Squint is a misalignment of the eyes. Early treatment in children supports healthy visual development; adults can benefit too.

Squint is not only a cosmetic concern — in children it can lead to lazy eye (amblyopia) if not treated in time. We assess vision, eye alignment and focusing carefully before recommending glasses, patching, exercises or surgery.

What is a squint?

Squint (strabismus) is a condition where the two eyes do not look in the same direction. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward or downward, constantly or intermittently. The brain may ignore the image from the misaligned eye, which in children can cause amblyopia (lazy eye).

Symptoms & signs

  • Eyes visibly pointing in different directions
  • Double vision (especially in adults)
  • Closing one eye in bright light
  • Head tilt or turn
  • Reduced vision in one eye

Causes & risk factors

  • Imbalance in eye muscles or their nerve control
  • Uncorrected refractive error (e.g., hypermetropia)
  • Family history
  • Premature birth or developmental conditions
  • Nerve palsy, thyroid disease or injury (in adults)

Who needs this treatment?

  • Children with constant or intermittent squint
  • Children with lazy eye
  • Adults with double vision or longstanding squint

How it is diagnosed

  • Visual acuity testing
  • Cycloplegic refraction
  • Cover tests and prism measurement
  • Eye movement assessment
  • Retina and nerve examination

Treatment options

Glasses

Correcting refractive error can straighten some squints.

Patching / occlusion therapy

Treats amblyopia by strengthening the weaker eye.

Orthoptic exercises

Helpful for some convergence problems.

Adjusting eye muscles to improve alignment.
